Adinkra: Symbols of Power and the Nature of Reality

By: Marcella Hayes Muhammad / Artist /

Physicists have long sought to describe the universe in terms of equations. Now, Dr. Sylvester James Gates Jr. explains how research on a class of geometric symbols known as Adinkras could lead to fresh insights into the theory of supersymmetry — and perhaps even the very nature of reality.  Dr. S. James Gates Jr. is Toll Professor of Physics and Director of the Center for String and Particle Theory at the University of Maryland in College Park. He served on President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

I begin this blog as proof that there was a deep intellectual civilization on the African continent long before Caucasians even began to explore or even opened their minds to see what was really in front of them. So much wisdom and knowledge was thrown aside simply because they didn’t believe it was possible from the darker race of people.

As time goes along, more discoveries are made to prove this fact that the Black man and woman were the first on this planet and all wisdom and knowledge came from them. These Adinkra symbols tell a story of community, morality, power and reality. They are in essence complex ideas within complex shapes developed by the darker race of people on the African continent. Adinkras are hidden wisdom in proverbs through design. Of the hundreds of Adinkra signs and meanings that have been documented, the older symbols are most often linked to proverbs, folktales, folk-songs and popular sayings.

Gye Nyame has become an icon of all Adinkra, encapsulating the faith of an African people who see God’s involvement in every aspect of human life. The literal translation is “Except God”. In today’s  youthful culture around the world you can see Gye Nyame worn proudly in jewelry as earrings, bracelets and as enhancements on clothing.
