Maruva Pebbles Collection

By: Marcella Hayes Muhammad / Artist

This collection was created in 1998 as one of several designs for a large textile company in New York. My sister, Dianne, and I went to New York to make a FORMAL presentation to the company representatives for designers and had a very good experience. They were very interested in our designs and were opening up to the idea of designs from minority artists. They indicated that they would be back in touch with us with possible contracts within the week. But, time passed and they had a major shakeup in the company as it was purchased by another company and shipped to an offshore location in Brazil. Personnel in the company were downsized and many laid off, whole departments were discontinued including the one with which we were negotiating. It seemed that they were blindsided and as shocked as we were to find out they were fired. This was the beginning of the down-slope of licensing with individual artists and small companies and in particular with minorities as many major companies in the textile industry were sent offshore.

So this “Pebbles” collection stayed on the shelf for future opportunity of licensing. Meanwhile the original creations were framed and presented as visual art in galleries and festivals. This year “Pebbles” designs along with 6 others are available with a Print on Demand Company and I am licensed to collect a percentage of sales from my designer collection. This collection is available in the form of silk tops, modal scarves, silk square scarves, silk sleeveless tops, knit boyfriend tees, sleeveless knit tees, and men’s silk pocket squares.

Now let me explain the workmanship of this particular collection. Each “Pebble” is hand cut from designer paper that I personally created using acrylics for color blend. I place each pebble onto a background color that enhances the pebbles and place them according to color to get a particular color effect. No two pebbles are the same. Each has an individual pattern and placed to its best advantage in the composition. Then they are individually glued into place. After the composition is dry, I enhance each pebble by circling them with an outline of white acrylic for the SUMMER SPLASH collection or gold acrylic for the WINTER WARMTH collection. In between each of the pebbles I have incorporated dots and circles representing the good eyes of protection for the owner of the piece and connecting the composition together as a complete piece. I then scan the finished composition into a high resolution file to send to the company for printing. They print the design onto the fabric and have it constructed into a wearable garment or scarf as ordered, then box and ship to the customer.

This collection is original and only available through designs by Marcella Muhammad. You can reach the company at the above link or from this website’s front page on the more button.

I want to personally thank all of the customers that have made purchases and encourage you to share this information with your friends.
