ABOUT COLLECTING ART
1. Tips on Collecting . . .
2. Abstract Art . . .When collecting art, look for the same basics you expect in a good book:
- good technical skills and a good message. The Artist's Skills:
Whether self taught or formally trained, all artists use basic elements and principals to create their work. The technical skill of the visual artists depends on how they use the following basics.:
- the elements of color, value, line, shape, form, texture and space
- the principles of balance, contrast, proportion, pattern, rhythm, emphasis, unity, and variety.
When you look at a piece of art, it should capture your eye, be comfortable to look at and hold your interest. When you look at the work of masters like Henry O. Tanner, it is engaging and enjoyable to view. All of the elements and principals are mastered to create the exact mood or feeling the artist wants to communicate. If you are not comfortable with a piece of art, it is usually because one of these elements is off.
The Artist's Message:
Art that is well executed and has a good message becomes a powerful expression of the artist. Those are the pieces that are most collectable. The message can be profound or a simple appreciation of beauty. Art that inspires or moves you is the art you should collect. Our advice is simple:
- Collect what you like. Choose art you don’t mind looking at for the next 15 years. If the value goes up, great! If not, you’ve still have a piece of art that you enjoy.
- Decide if you want to be a serious collector or if you just want nice images on your walls.
- If you want to be a serious collector, buy originals. You can enjoy their beauty and value much longer than prints and they can be handed down as a legacy to your children or grandchildren.
- If you just want nice images on your walls, mass produced prints allow you to enjoy art in your environment at an affordable price. When you have filled up your walls with prints, you can always start replacing them with originals.
- And remember, most artists will work with you on payment plans for originals if you ask.

Abstract Art
The idea of abstract art is to use the same elements and principals mentioned above to create mood and feeling without relying on a specific image to create that message. That is quite a challenge for the artist to accomplish.“Plastic Space" is an original style of abstract painting developed by Marcella during her early years of painting. She wanted to find a way to add more visual excitement and dimension into abstract art. She describes Plastic Space as, “creating a three dimensional sculpture on a two dimensional surface.” She uses her mastery of balance, perspective, direction of light, shadow, and highlights to create an in and out play of depth and form giving a multi-dimensional, touchable, textural feel to a visual image. The fluid lines and pleasant colors are relaxing to the eye as it moves from the front highlights to the shadowy depths of the image.
